These diets are called popular because, admittedly, most of us have tried one before.
Some people refer to them as so-called “fad” diets that splash on the scene every year. Often they’re written by a charismatic personality, trainer or celebrity. You hear about them on TV talk shows and read about them at the checkout line. Some — like Atkins, South Beach, Ornish and Plant Paradox— are even written by physicians.
Many promise dramatic results. Some are dismissed by experts as bogus. But some have enough merit that doctors are pushed to take a closer look.
Followers of popular diets are motivated by specific benefits promised by the various diets. Usually it’s weight loss. Whatever the goal, these Selectivors are trying to improve themselves through food choices.
